Grammar Clinic for the CSS Essay
Weak language is the finding FPSC examiners repeat most: grammar, sentence structure, spelling and word choice (2014, 2017, 2025). The Grammar Clinic runs alongside the essay course, one unit a week, and focuses on the errors that appear most often in Pakistani candidates' scripts.
Start with the diagnostic
24 questions, two on each unit. Your results set your three priority units.

Subject–verb agreement
The single most common error in CSS scripts. Long subjects hide the real noun, and the verb ends up agreeing with the wrong word.
Unit 2 · Week 2Articles: a, an, the, and none
Urdu has no articles, so they are the most frequent error for Pakistani writers: missing where needed, added where not.
Unit 3 · Week 3Tenses and tense consistency
Candidates shift between past and present in one paragraph and overuse the continuous tense. Both make arguments hard to follow.
Unit 4 · Week 4Prepositions and Pakistani-English usage
Many expressions common in Pakistani English are errors in standard English. Examiners notice them at once.
Unit 5 · Week 5Sentence boundaries: run-ons, comma splices, fragments
The 2017 report flagged faulty sentence structure. Long sentences joined by commas are the main cause.
Unit 6 · Week 6Pronouns: reference and agreement
Unclear 'it', 'they' and 'this' break coherence (E4): the reader loses track of what the argument is about.
Unit 7 · Week 7Modifiers: misplaced and dangling
A modifier in the wrong place changes the meaning, and examiners read it literally.
Unit 8 · Week 8Parallel structure
Outlines and lists are where parallelism breaks most. A clean parallel list reads as clear thinking.
Unit 9 · Week 9Conditionals and modal verbs
Policy arguments live in 'if' sentences and in 'should/must/could'. Errors here weaken recommendations.
Unit 10 · Week 10Punctuation that examiners notice
Punctuation errors make sentences ambiguous and give an untidy impression on the first page.
Unit 11 · Week 11Word choice, confusables and comparison
The 2014 report flagged poor word choice. One wrong word can change a claim's meaning.
Unit 12 · Week 12Clichés, redundancy and formal register
Experts and examiners penalise clichéd, bookish and padded writing (2014, 2025). Cutting it raises both the language and originality marks.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most common grammar mistakes in CSS essays?
Subject–verb agreement, articles (a, an, the), tense consistency, prepositions like 'discuss about', comma splices, and clichés such as 'since time immemorial'.
How can I improve grammar for CSS quickly?
Take a diagnostic to find your three weakest areas, practise one unit a week, and keep an error log of every mistake found in your own essays.
Is 'discuss about' correct?
No. 'Discuss' takes a direct object: 'discuss the issue'. The noun form takes 'about': 'a discussion about the issue'.
