CSS Essay Time Management

Timed mocks: Three full 3-hour papers: about 30 min outline, 2 hrs writing, 15 min revision.

In short. Spend about 10 minutes choosing the topic, 30 minutes on the outline, two hours writing, and the last 15 to 20 minutes revising for agreement, articles, tense shifts and comma splices.

By the end of this module you can

  • Write a complete essay in exam conditions
  • Manage time across outline, writing and revision
  • Use the last 15 minutes to catch grammar errors

Knowing how to write an essay and writing one in three hours by hand are different skills. Mocks build the second.

  1. 0:00–0:10 Choose the topic (Module 2 method).
  2. 0:10–0:40 Outline: thesis, arguments, counter-arguments, conclusion.
  3. 0:40–2:40 Write. Roughly 15–20 minutes per body section.
  4. 2:40–3:00 Revise: read for agreement, articles, tense shifts and missing words.
Tip. Revision pass in this order: (1) every subject–verb pair in long sentences, (2) a/an/the before singular countable nouns, (3) tense consistency in each paragraph, (4) comma splices around 'however' and 'therefore', (5) spelling of the words in the topic itself.
Tip. Handwriting matters. An examiner who cannot read a word cannot give it marks. Write clearly, leave a line between paragraphs, and cross out with a single line.

Frequently asked questions

How much time should I spend on the CSS essay outline?

About 30 minutes. A complete outline makes the writing faster and keeps the essay on topic.
