- Module 3
Grammar Diagnostic for CSS Essay Writers
Grammar diagnostic: A 24-question diagnostic that finds your weakest grammar areas and builds your personal error log.
By the end of this module you can
- Find the grammar areas that cost you marks
- Start an error log you will use for 12 weeks
- Learn the five errors examiners see most in Pakistani scripts
Weak language is the most repeated finding in FPSC reports: grammar, sentence structure, spelling and word choice in 2014, 2017 and again in 2025. Language carries 20 of 100 marks in this course rubric, but it also decides how every other criterion is read. An examiner who stumbles on errors stops trusting the argument.
Most candidates make the same small set of errors again and again. The fastest way to improve is to find yours and fix them one at a time, not to read a grammar book cover to cover.
- Take the diagnostic in the Grammar Clinic. It has two questions on each of 12 areas.
- Your three weakest areas become your priority units.
- Every essay you write from now on goes through the grammar check in the Practice Studio.
- Each error found is logged against its unit. Repeat a unit when the same error appears twice.
- Subject–verb agreement with long subjects: "The performance of the candidates were poor."
- Missing or extra articles: "Government should take the notice."
- Tense shifts within a paragraph.
- Pakistani-English prepositions: "discuss about", "cope up with", "comprises of".
- Run-on sentences joined with commas.

This week's grammar: Tenses and tense consistency
Candidates shift between past and present in one paragraph and overuse the continuous tense. Both make arguments hard to follow.
